You know when someone covers a song and goes a whole different direction than the original, and they absolutely kill it? This is that, and it’s amazing.

This is now a cover song thread, post your favorite covers.

Sounds like you would like pretty much anything from “Postmodern Jukebox”. Scott Bradlee’s thing with that group is taking songs and performing them in a completely different style.

My favorite ever cover though is Reggie Watts covering Van Halen’s Panama

PS: i also subscribe to BBC Radio 1's youtube... And I had watched/listened to that before I clicked on Oppo at ll this morning, lol

I definitely like this one a lot better, but I’m a huge fan of piano covers.

Fiona Apples redo of Pure Imagination is probably my favorite dark cover and then the piano cover of the cover is splendid

here’s Fiona’s version

That one by Jonny Cash always gives me chills. It’s amazing.

Don’t have a link since I’m on my phone, but I Will Survive by CAKE and Tumbling Dice by The Gaslight Anthem are pretty great. Rise Against’s live cover of The Ghost of Tom Joad is amazing, too.

Is a better cover of a completely shit song considered good? I don’t know the answer to that.

Since TheRealBicycleBuck already posted the The Sound of Silence cover by Disturbed, I’ll post Imagine by A Perfect Circle.

You beat me to Cash’s NIN cover. One of the best.

The first time I heard it, I actually sat in awed silence for about 15 minutes. The raw emotion conveyed is overwhelming.

Even Trent Reznor says that it’s now a Johnny Cash song.

I don’t know what song she is singing.

This is my current favorite cover.

Not sure if this linked properly — but it’s the voice performance of Christina Grimmie’s “How To Love” ... damn shame what happened to her, I didn’t know her personally but we went to the same High School. I Always get goosebumps when I listen to her take on this song, soooo good.

Ok, that was actually really good. And I like the original as well.

I’ve always liked Korn’s cover of The Wall.

I don’t see why everyone thinks this is so amazing. It sounds like hot garbage to me.

My three favorite cover songs:

1) The Knack - “No Matter What”. It helps when you start with a great song and punch it up. The Knack does this perfectly. Song starts at 2:22.

2) The Ataris - “Boys of Summer” Sense a theme here? Take a great song, punch it up, and make it your own.

3) Joshua Radin - Only You. Yaz’s version is very simple but powerful. This is a different take on instrumentation and achieves the same result.

To each his own! I had never heard the first song before. After listening to the lyrics and doing some digging, I discovered it’s Heathens by Twenty One Pilots and it’s from the Suicide Squad soundtrack which is a movie I did not see.

I listened to the original and was not impressed. The piano version posted is better, but it still didn’t impress me.

I think what touches many people about the Sound of Silence cover by disturbed is just how different it is from the original. There are also some interesting plays on the title, the band’s name, and just how loud it is given the original composition and the message within the song.

It’s interesting to me to hear what is makes our elders happy. I visit older relatives and hear them playing big band or country. As generation X starts displacing the baby boomers in the nursing homes, those places are going to start rockin’!

I love this. I can see how someone might read these lyrics and instinctively cover the song in this melancholy fashion. Great!

Have some Type O Negative. Summer Breeze (Seals & Croft - 1972)

Butch Walker live at Daryl’s House doing Say it isn’t So melts me. (ALL L@DH episodes are great and Butch’s was fun, just like he is as a musician. If you have never been to or watched one of his concerts, you are missing out.)

And Thunderstruck on banjos FTW!!!

Pretty cool, my favorite weird cover ever though is Tori Amos doing Slayer’s “Raining Blood”. Haunting!
